about

Electro-sega pioneers Babani Soundsystem return to the international scene with "Trwa Batan", delivered by FPE Records under the FPELV imprint. Based in Mauritius, Babani Soundsystem's sound blends the Indian Ocean’s traditional rhythms with new electronic influences. This collective of DJs, musicians and producers showcase a unique rendition of its island’s groove. On stage, Babani Soundsystem is a ceremony, a haunting audio-visual journey blending electronic sounds and organic rhythms.

Consisting entirely of percussion, "Trwa Batan" hits harder than ever, harnessing the mind-clearing power of pure rhythm and connecting ears directly to pulse. The title draws inspiration from a Mauritian phrase denoting a person of formidable physique, symbolizing the multifaceted nature of the track. Directly translated, it means "Three Beats," underscoring its compositional structure comprising three distinct rhythmic elements: fast, slow, and polyrhythmic. The use of a jerrican beat, a metallic alternative to the traditional ravanne, serves as the foundation for this unconventional piece, deviating from a more conventional, organic approach.

"1978", the latest from Chicago producer and Gesamt label head Takashi Shallow, imagines the tropes of contemporary techno filtered through the instrumentation of 1978. It's psychedelic sunset with all the drive of forty years of clubs and bodies, tripping, sweating, working it out. Fat, angelic Mellotron sighs mingle with psychedelic B3 stabs and an irresistible counter-melody on the Arp Solina, while Roland CR-78 lays down 4-on-the-floor with jackin hi-hat polyrhythms.

Maybe you're not a gearhead? Trip out on the blinking lights, dude. Believe us, it traverses the geography and history of electronic music through instrumentation and form - from Köln to Detroit, headspace to buttquake - but it's cool if you just want to listen without peeking under the hood.

Mozambican composer Nandele has made his name on the international scene over the past decade for a run of albums and productions like no one else in the world, revealing a ravenously creative, questioning spirit. His new track for FPE Records, "Muatide", named for a village in the northern province of Mozambique called Cabo Delgado, the plateau of the Makonde tribe, continues in that mercurial tradition.

Leaving behind the heavy dubs and boom-bap urbanisms of previous excursions, Nandele here presents a fiery ancient-future drum and bass / acid techno fusion, with heavy kick drums resembling the percussions of the mapiko of the Makonde Tribe in a sci-fi context. Commanding total immersion, "Muatide" goes everywhere immediately, converting whatever think-brain impulses you have into jerking, flailing catharsis.

Indonesian composer Tesla Manaf is a restless sonic adventurer, constantly searching for new sounds in classical, jazz, electronic and experimental music over a decade-plus musical career. Since 2019, he's devoted his creative energies to KUNTARI, a project that dives deeply into rhythm and percussion-based drones.

Following his 2022 EP Larynx (Yes No Wave), the track "Penarabadan" continues the dive. The title and structure are both derived from Manaf's practice of lucid dreaming, which he uses to create random music during his sleep. Prepared cornet simulates the voice of animal mating calls over a 15th-Century rhythm from Banyuwangi, known as Hadrah Kuntulan. The effect is a slowly melting milieu from which emerges a pulse that drives relentlessly toward a terrifying climax.
